Connecting Curriculum to Careers through Meaningful Partnerships

Connecting Curriculum to Careers through Meaningful Partnerships

Broadening Horizons is an innovative education program that enables meaningful engagement between industry and secondary school students to explore real world issues. The program provides students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 with valuable insights that help prepare them for work experience, build their confidence and understanding of future career possibilities. Industry benefits through helping young people prepare for work, developing staff capability through coaching and mentoring young people, and raising their profile in the community.

Currently implemented in over 18 schools and with more than 10 industry partners across Gippsland

Why the program

Broadening Horizons is designed to:

  • Provide real world learning opportunities for students, creating a link between their curriculum and the workplace.
  • Create a pathway for young people that prepares them for work experience and encourages greater engagement in their learning.
  • Provide a platform for industry to engage with youth on a range of important issues, whilst building the self-confidence, maturity and career aspirations of young people.

How does it work

Industry partners provide insights into their world of work and present a real-world challenge within their industry or workplace. Students apply their design thinking and enquiry-based learning to work through the challenge, supported by industry mentoring and excursion visit. Students present their innovative ideas and solutions to their industry partner and panel. A member of the Broadening Horizons team is on hand to support each stage of the program, including partner formation, program planning and delivery, and continuous improvement.

Modules focus

The Broadening Horizons Learner Journey is made up of four modules:

  • Module 1: Year 7 or 8 students learn more about themselves so they can discover, explore and feel excited about their future careers.
  • Module 2: Year 9 students explore local career opportunities and experience the world of work firsthand.
  • Module 3: Year 10 students engage in a tailored work experience program that aligns with career interests and priority sectors.
  • Alternative Module 3: Year 10 students unable to attend intensive work experience placements can explore real challenges faced by local workplaces in small groups and undertake research, site visits (virtual or in person) or staggered work experience placement. Students will explore who is impacted by the challenge and generate possible solutions to be presented back to local industry.
  • Three Day Design Sprint: Year 9 students explore the design thinking framework and solve industry challenges across a three day sprint.

Module delivery

Each module is made up of six stages that take students on a journey of understanding their passions and interests, and the potential careers these may align with, to exploring local career and pathway opportunities and engaging in challenges faced by local industry today. Module 2 includes an industry immersion activity and Module 3 includes a work experience as part of the delivery of the Broadening Horizons program.

Program delivery is customised for each school based on students’ needs, capacity and resourcing and timetables. Some examples of delivery may be one day per week over a term, a condensed program of 4 to 6 weeks during the term or over a school year.
