INDUSTRY EXPECTATIONS AND TIME COMMITMENT
Industry representatives spend some time in schools providing information about their organisation and the jobs and career paths available, plus mentoring students during the challenge exploration time. This assists students to ask questions, brainstorm and share concepts they’re considering. Industry immersion activities and a work experience include industry site visits to provide a wider breadth to the challenge experience. There is scope for industry partners to determine the forms of engagement, commitment, timing, and duration of the projects.
We do ask that you commit to the full program as discussed and agreed upon in the program planning meeting.
Governance:
It’s important that our program delivery covers all aspects of health and safety requirements for everyone involved. That’s why all industry representatives hosting and engaging with our young people must have a current Working with Children Check. We are happy to provide you with a checklist to assist in streamlining this process.
Financial commitment:
In most cases there will be minimal to no cost for industry to engage in the program. Some industry partners may provide a morning tea or lunch when students undertake your industry site visit. Depending on the challenge the students are working on, if any materials, production, or design of products is required the industry partner is responsible for these costs where this exceeds $150.
Any formal Work Experience opportunity either as part of the Broadening Horizons (BH) program or that arises from any BH activities, requires a daily payment of $5 a day to be made to each student. This arrangement is outlined in the Work Experience Arrangement Form.
Your time is a valuable contribution, and many industry partners find the program a very rewarding experience, with professional development outcomes for their staff.
Site visits:
If an industry site visit is possible then we will work with you to complete all the required paperwork and training requirements. Site visits for students create excitement. It’s a time where students can visualise tangible opportunities and future career pathways with your organisation. Industry partners can showcase their sites and share experiences with students. We may complete a Work Experience Arrangement Form under the Ministerial Order for Year 10 students participating in site visits. This will be discussed at the program planning meeting.
Problem/challenge scoping:
An element of our program modules includes an industry problem/challenge. We ask industry to present a problem/challenge scenario for students to work through. Examples of previous problems/challenges can be viewed on our Program Outcomes page. Industry partners are encouraged to contact your local BH Team member to discuss your ideas.
